Come to me [Jesus], all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28 ESV emphasis mine).

Why do I try to take control of my circumstances, even though I know there’s really no circumstance I can control?
I promise God I will let go of those situations in my life that need His direction the most. And I do let go. For a day. Maybe even a week or two. But peace alludes me and my hands begin to creep up on the wheel again. My grip tightens as I decide it’s time to drive the outcome.
As humans we tend to think God needs our help. Isn’t that because we aren’t completely surrendered to walking in God’s peace?
I believe God spoke to me about this in a dream. Lory and I were driving a small car with no lights in the pitch black of night. Our car suddenly began plummeting, falling straight down into the darkness. And God said, “Take your hands off the wheel!” Would you have let go?
Unlike my typical response, I quickly released the wheel. The next scene in the dream was canvased in daylight. We were happily driving along, without fear or concern.
What I learned from this dream changed my life.
God showed me that my willingness to let go of the wheel pertains to giving up control of life’s circumstances to Jesus. Even when the stakes are high … like driving off a cliff. God is in control of my life, not me.
After following Jesus for years, I’ve realized He does not want me riddled with burdens. He wants to release me from life’s heaviness and instill peace in my heart, especially in these times.
My responsibility is simple: “Come to Jesus” with all my troubles.
So, what’s your takeaway? Your relationship with Jesus is not about following rules of dos and don’ts. It’s about taking steps toward Jesus. The word “Come” in this verse is “Deute” in the original Greek, which is a strong appeal on the will of another to take action.
Jesus speaks to us with a sense of urgency. “Come” to Him. He knows the burdens we are carrying. And He knows the peace He can offer, even when our car feels as if it’s careening off the cliff.
Read Matthew 11:28-30 and come to Jesus by intently pursuing a deeper relationship with Him. Leave the outcome to Him, by taking your hands off life’s wheel.
The Conversation
Thank you, Scott! You know how badly I needed this. It is hard, but with this encouragement I’ll continue to try to let GOD handle those situations I can’t. I appreciate your being there for me and God using you to give me His comfort.
