Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! (Psalm 46:10 ESV).

When I’m in a rush and my entire body is on GO mode, it feeds an exhilaration that’s almost addictive. Perhaps God wired me this way—a drive fueled on passion in order to fulfill the purpose He’s woven into my soul.
But sometimes the “adrenaline junky” in me sets sail toward what I want to accomplish and I miss the wind of God’s power driving me to His desires.
That said, it’s not easy for me to be still. The end result? Burn out, disappointment, and frustration.
God reminds me often of Matthew 6:33, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.” But before I can truly seek God with all my heart, I need to “Be still, and know that He is God!”
Be still in this context is derived from the Greek word râphâh, which means to be relaxed, to not put forth an effort or exertion. The idea here is when we remain still with all situations in our life, we leave matters in God’s hands. We don’t have to be anxious about what we are facing.
And know that I am God reminds us to look at the evidence of who God is in the Bible and all He is doing now. God is vastly bigger than anything we face. More powerful than all the obstacles standing in the way of walking faithfully with Jesus.
So how can we be still and know God? Seek God first in all things.
This means turn to Him for counsel first, before you ask a friend or jump on social media. Sound too simple? It’s not. God made our journey with Him simple. We muck it up when we think we know better than God or that our solutions could ever be better than His. Don’t believe me? Open your Bible to the stories of Adam & Eve, Abraham, Jacob, Peter, Judas.
“This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him” (Psalm 18:30 ESV).
Spend some time alone with God today. Practice being still before Him.
