Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it. (Luke 18:16b-17 ESV)
By: Scott Schuler
I get exhausted when a friend or child comes to me, asking for something or complaining about the same thing, over and over. But not once do they ask how I’m doing or if they can help me.
I wonder if God feels the same way when I pray constantly for answers, signs, and wonders. Or grumble about situations in my life. Yet I don’t rest before Him, listening for what He has to say or asking, “What can I do for you today, Father?”
Prayer should be a balancing act of our wants and God’s desires.
Jesus warned us not to make prayer all about us or we will be like the “hypocrites” (Matthew 6:5).
Merriam-Webster defines hypocrite as “a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion.” Jesus sees right through us when our heart is off and we approach Him with false motives. It’s probably better we don’t pray if our prayer is not sincere.
Too often we view our prayers as popping coins into the Kingdom vending machine to get something from God.
So how should we approach God in prayer?
Come as a child. Ask questions about God’s nature, creativity, omnipotence. Seek to know Him more.
Rather than asking God for things, seek to be transformed by Him.
Start by listening twice as much as you talk––the ratio of ears to mouth. You’ll be surprised how well God communicates when you approach Him with a heart filled with awe and wonder.
By the way, my greatest answers to prayers are not always what God says, but more the peace He provides to displace my troubles. God loves me. This I know … because the Bible tells me so. And He loves you too. Even when you’re the nagging friend or child.
Your prayer assignment: Simply come to God in prayer just to know Him more. And resolve to be okay with the outcome, even if it means silence.
The Conversation
Well said Scott! Sometimes our minds are going so fast it is hard to sit and listen for His voice and feel His peace! Thank you for encouraging us to simply LISTEN to Him!
