We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV).

Toxic relationships. Most people experience at least one and it leaves a lasting impression. Mine was in college. She constantly interrogated me, questioning every move as if under a microscope. When I didn’t provide the answer she wanted, an argument ensued. I felt smothered and stalked—and this was before technology and social media tracked everything we did.

I started plotting how to get out. Remember Paul Simon’s song, “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover?” A human’s natural tendency against feeling trapped is fight or flight. I chose flight, “out the back, Jack.” And the freedom felt good.

Freedom grows confidence and instills peace. Jesus wants you to be free because He knows freedom gives you the opportunity to choose Him.

Nothing stands in the way of a faithful walk with Jesus when you are free.

But what holds believers in bondage? Sin. Everyone sins. Not one person is perfect, but your perfect Savior, Jesus, helps you through a lifelong process of being separated from sin—sanctification. You need to understand what this means.

Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus works in and through you to change actions within your soul (mind, will and emotions) and body. Jesus sees the bait (temptation) Satan uses to hook and reel you into his clutches. Jesus also knows the weakest areas (heart voids) within you.

When you commit to offer your body as a living sacrifice and reprogram your mind (Romans 12:1–2), the Holy Spirit can complete His transforming work. He separates you from behaviors and actions that do not honor God.

As a result, sanctification gets your heart right with God.

Your commitment to sanctification is a challenge to the Enemy. You may feel more drawn toward your weaknesses and strongholds when you commit to get your heart right with Jesus. Don’t allow Satan’s discouragement. What can you do?

Paul makes it clear in 2 Corinthians 10:5: “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God and take every thought captive to obey Christ.”

Simply put, talk to Jesus about every thought that comes to mind. Prayer brings truth to deception and clarity to entangling thoughts. Like developing any good habit, it takes time. But just as you enjoy talking with your best friend, eventually you will find yourself talking to Jesus.

Constant communication with Jesus deters the Enemy’s sidetracks and keeps your feet on the narrow path of life.

Ask Jesus to show you thought patterns that initiate doubt and anxiety or behaviors that lead to sin. What thoughts are in opposition to God’s truth, cutting you short of being free?

Journal what He reveals, seeking His guidance in replacing these thoughts with His. Search for and memorize verses counter to the negative thought patterns.

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand,” (Ephesians 6:11-13, KJV).

Satan is roaming the earth looking for prey…O, dear Lord, we pray him away…

He wants you to fall, he’s looking for prey
he’s roaming the earth each night and each day.
His arrows are flying, he sends them to slay
he wants your attention, he wants you to stray.

Pay satan no heed, get down on your knees
pray to our Father and satan will flee.
The good Lord is righteous, mighty, and strong,
more forceful than satan, who always does wrong.
